“Do you know who I am?” He narrowed his eyes. “Do you?”

“Not a clue. I thought you were a handsome man who happened to share my elevator car,” she said, trying to be nonchalant. Once he learned her true identity, he’d want something from her. “That’s it. Should I know you?”

“You don’t know?” he asked.

He must be the Crane Gray he’d bragged about. She rolled her eyes. “I’ve said it already. I don’t know you.” She wasn’t lying, even if she’d guessed his identity. “I thought we had a connection, but now I’m scared of you, so I’m leaving.” She turned on her heel and crossed the room.

“Wait.” He touched her arm. “You don’t know?”

“No.” She propped her hand on her hip. “I’d like to go now—if you don’t mind.” This must be part of what Leto meant by screwing with her happiness. Sometimes things with guys just didn’t work out.

“Please don’t.” He held his hand out to her. “I’m Crane Gray and it’s nice to meet you—someone who doesn’t know me. I’ve got a concert here at the hotel tonight. I should be prepping for it, but I just don’t care and I want out of my life for a while. You fascinate me and I’m enjoying myself here in the bar. I’d like you to stay. Please?”

She debated what to do. Stay with Crane, the celebrity, or find someone a little more boring.

“Will you at least tell me your name?” he asked. “Have a drink with me?”

The door sprung open just as the cab started to move. Mr. Duffy clambered inside, his face an emotionless mask, and slammed the door behind him.

He settled next to her, facing forward, saying nothing.

Juliana twisted her fingers around her pocket-book. Her skin went clammy, then hot.

“Where to?” the driver called down to them.

She bit her lip, sliding Mr. Duffy a sideways glance. Even if he wasn’t here, she’d be hard-pressed to answer that question. But his answer would be worse than anything she could come up with.

She opened her mouth, but Mr. Duffy cut her off. “Vincent Street. A block north of St. Mary’s.”

The address wasn’t familiar. It definitely wasn’t her family’s usual London lodgings. “Where are we going?”

He grunted.

“How did you find me?”

“I followed you from Mr. Huddleson’s home.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “You don’t have that many friends.”

“I have plenty of friends!” Her face flushed. But most of them were also Snow’s friends.

She glanced at the door opposite.

Mr. Duffy gripped her elbow. “Don’t even think of it.”

“Jump from a moving cab?” She sniffed. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

He arched an eyebrow.

She grumbled. Well, she wouldn’t think of it, not when he held her arm so tightly. “I could always scream,” she said.

“You could,” he agreed. “Why haven’t you?”

She chewed on her lower lip. She didn’t think she’d ever screamed in her life, not a full-throated help-I’m-being-murdered kind of scream. She didn’t know if she could force the sound from her throat, not without feeling foolish. “Would it be effective?”

He snorted. “Definitely not.”

“Remember the song I did with Jude Sanders? Three years down the road, it’s a hit. Summer Song is the defining song of this season—according to the charts. What do you think about that?” He’d known the song was a hit when they’d recorded it, but Kel and others had seen it as a liability.

“Gag. You know why that is?” Kel asked. “Because a few disc jockeys and their veejay friends worked with influencers and kids on the internet to promote it. They made it happen. Big deal.”

“If the numbers are right, then it is a big deal and will be a good payday.” He switched off the monitor. “I could use the money and chance to get back to playing music instead of doing these lousy movies.”

“You’re doing the movie. Period. You don’t need to record music any longer. You can do this and get more attention. Remember how you wanted to do that bio pic? The Rat Ragland film? If you keep doing these and show your range, you’ll get that film.” Kel folded his arms. “You do realize you get more eyeballs this way.”

“Eyeballs don’t help when I’m not getting paid for the work.” He fiddled with the mirror again. The memory of his reflection came to mind. He’d been made up to look old, and the creases and dark circles did him no favors. He wanted to record again. He came alive in the studio and music flowed in his soul. Playing the movie star wasn’t his thing, no matter how much he wanted to do the punk rocker’s bio flick. He hated trying to remember his lines while being someone else. Being himself was hard enough. His fans expected Payday, the flamboyant pop star with no holds barred. They wanted spectacle and sass.

"You’re getting paid.” Kel swatted Blake’s arm. “Grow up and stop getting pissed. It’s crap.”

“Why?” He watched Kel flip through the book on the counter. Blake doubted Kel read much of anything, especially not Shakespeare. He wouldn’t know a rhyming couplet from expository writing. Kel tossed the book onto the couch and glared at Blake. His stare could bore holes through steel when he got angry. Kel liked to use his hands and his thundering voice to get his point across. Most of the time, the tactic worked and Blake benefitted, but sometimes Kel could be abrasive and cruel.

“You have the whole summer ahead of you, so stop thinking about the past and enjoy the sun. You’re in California. There’s sun, fun and chicks. Get laid and shut up.” Kel shook his head. “Ever since Jude got into your brain and messed with you, you’ve been off your game.”

No kidding. Jude had churned up the feelings Blake thought he’d buried. Then again, Blake hadn’t come out to Kel, and Kel had no idea Blake wasn’t attracted to women. Christ. His behavior and appearance, wearing makeup and the rainbow colors, should’ve clued Kel in by now. Every time he did a collaboration, he did it with camp and style. He preferred to sing with other men and be flamboyant.

“Let me find you a chick. We’ll get you sexed up and you’ll chill out.” Kel nodded. “I’ll be back.”

Blake sighed as his promoter left. He didn’t want to be with a woman, random or otherwise. Truth be told, he wanted to be with Jude. That wasn’t going to happen now, and he’d have to listen to their song all summer as a reminder of what he’d given up.

A beefy guy in mirrored aviators stood sentry outside the door, three people lined up in front of him.

“I write for a very popular music blog, The Night of the Living Dude,” the one in front pleaded. “We get almost a thousand hits a day. It would be great publicity for the band.”

“That’s what Karma Korn needs, is more publicity,” the security guy drawled. He raised his chin slightly, and Grace could feel him watching her from behind his sunglasses. “And who are you?” he asked. “You write for Suzie’s Super Opinions on Music blog or something?”

The others turned to watch her suspiciously. Grace swallowed, giving the goon her best smile. “I’m Grace Morgan. Lawrence Shaupin from High Note sent me to do an article about Karma Korn’s new album.”

The goon’s eyebrows inched slightly higher as the three other hopefuls shuffled their feet. Flies buzzed around the sticky spot in Grace’s hair. “High Note,” the goon said. He gazed off toward the potted palms flanking the entry, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “There’s already a chick in there says she’s doing an article for High Note. Nice chick. Looks like that actress in all the action movies, except lankier, more freckles.”

Grace’s heart sank. Marla Pocchino. “I know her, she’s another freelancer.”

The security guy watched Grace with crossed arms. Sweat soaked into the cheap fabric of her pantsuit as she waved the flies from her hair. Finally, the guy nodded. “Go ahead.”

Kyle heard a baby crying in the main cabin. Passengers were starting to flood first class. They were pushing each other to try and see what was happening. Several were yelling hysterically.

Kyle headed back toward his seat, where a couple passengers were helping the first-class flight attendant tape over the bullet holes. The piece of tape they stuck to the wall was quickly sucked out the hole. The loud hissing returned.

“My dad told me they used wet toilet paper in the Air Force to plug small holes in their planes.”

Kyle turned to see Cora beside him.

Mila raised her eyebrows. “Toilet paper?”

Cora nodded. “Yeah, they would get it wet and wad it up against the hole. Then the end would get sucked outside and freeze to seal the leaking air.”

A male passenger tossed the medical tape onto a seat. “It’s worth a try. I’ll go get some.”

Kyle and Cora stepped aside for him to move past them. Kyle stepped toward Mila and put his hand on her shoulder.

“You need to get on the Intercom and tell everyone to calm down. The hijackers are dead. We need them to stop panicking.”

She turned toward him. “Okay.”

“Is that the pilot?” one of the passengers from the back screamed, seeing the co-pilot’s body at the front of first class.

“Please!” Kyle put both hands in the air. “We need everyone to return to their seats.”

He turned toward Mila as she pulled the Intercom from the wall. “Try not to alarm everyone,” he said to her in a low voice. He took a step toward her over the dead hijacker. “But we need to know if there’s anyone on board who can fly a plane.”

 

My Review

4 Stars

 

The Pilot’s Daughter was a rollercoaster ride of excitement and face paced scenarios. My only qualm was the rushed relationship between Cora and Kyle. However, given the stress they were under, it’s somewhat understandable.

That said, the author did do a good job of setting the scene and making us feel as if we were there, on the plane, with all the other passengers. And, the climactic landing scenes were well written.

As I said, I wanted more from Kyle and Cora. The attraction felt rushed. However, with this huge cast of characters (some fleeting, some not), it was easy to see how the action was far more integral to the plot than the relationships.

If you’re a fan of thrillers, especially those that involve airplanes and hijackers, you will likely enjoy this book.
