“Look at that… Didn’t even break the pot.” Gran gave her a sassy little wink. “You’ve always been one for divine timing, Kitty.”

“Pot?”

“Yup, I knew I had a matching teapot to the set that came in yesterday.” Gran stood a little straighter and squared her chin. “Besides, I’m not alone. Ben is here.”

“Who the heck is Ben?”

“That’d be me.” A deep, male voice came from behind, startling Kat. Spinning with a gasp, her eyes widened when connecting with six feet plus of drop-dead gorgeous, dark-haired man. He met her stare full-on without so much as a hint of humility, and he nodded a curt greeting.

“Haddie Marshall, are you up to your old tricks again?” Ben brushed past Kat. “I told you to wait and I’d look with you.”

“Well, I didn’t want you fussing. I know you’re busy.”

“Excuse me,” Kat interrupted, not bothering to disguise the irritation in her voice. “Who are you, and why would you allow my seventy-seven-year-old grandmother to climb to the scorching top of a barn and up a ladder for a teapot?”

The man stared at her in silence. One dark brow cocked in obvious annoyance.

“Ben Hadley…meet my first grandbaby, Kitty Worthington,” Gran announced with a proud smile.

“It’s Kat, Gran. Or Katrina,” she grumbled. “No one has called me Kitty since the fifth grade.”

“Oh, shush, child. You’ll always be Kitty to me and Grandpa Mike.” The elderly woman’s smile fell away. She took a wobbly step forward to hand Ben the box. “Be a love and take this down for me. I think I’d better hang on extra tight to the railing after all this excitement.”

“I’ll take the box,” Kat snapped. “You help my grandmother back to the house, where we can turn on some air conditioning.”

Meet the Author

The rich history and many mysteries of New England are the perfect backdrop for many of KATHRYN’s books. Winding roads lined by old stone walls, forgotten cemeteries, grand homes with shadowy pasts...all sparks for her imagination. Whether it’s a quaint seaside town or the vibrant city of Boston, it’s easy for this “hauntingly romantic” author to envision the past mingling with the present. No surprise, some of Kathryn’s favorite stories involve time travel. And ghosts! Sprinkle in some magic, and you’re off on a great adventure.

When not writing, this best-selling author is researching, gardening, or cooking up something special in her chaotic kitchen. She shares her colonial home in the north woods with those she loves most – her wonderful husband and daughter, and three crazy dogs.

A Sneak Peek - Coming September 2021

Kyle Worthington hasn’t returned to Last Chance Beach in years. He’s worked hard to prove himself to his overbearing father and the rest of the world. Now it’s October, and the vacation island paradise is celebrating the season with an island-wide Fall Festival. Family obligation demands he participate. Everyone will be there, including the ghost that haunts his grandparents’ B&B.

The running joke that Kyle never sticks with anything—not a career or a woman—will continue to plague him. Unless he brings a knockout of a date to the weekend-long event. Cassandra Corwin fits the bill perfectly. Kyle’s had his eye on his brilliant, beautiful coworker since day one. But Cassie is an enigma, a loner. There’s no room in her life for anyone except Odin, her goofball of a Great Dane.

Will this woman of mystery agree to Kyle’s scheme to impress his family? Can two near strangers from opposite worlds survive family gatherings and back-to-back Halloween events while pretending to be a couple? Kyle’s father seems hell-bent on derailing everything before they even shout “Boo!”

Or will the island’s magic prove too powerful for them to resist?

SANTA BABY by Author Peggy Jaeger **BOOK BIRTHDAY**

The only thing better than my own Book Birthday, is that of a good friend. Today, Notes From a Romantic's Heart is overjoyed to welcome Author Peggy Jaeger back to the blog to share her new book, Santa Baby, a Dickens Holiday Romance prequel set in the 1980s!

About the Book

It’s Christmas Eve morning in the tiny New England town of Dickens.

Santa’s arrival is imminent, and a hint of snow is in the air.

Amy Dorrit is just about to open her popular diner for the breakfast rush when she discovers an abandoned baby on her back doorstep.

Amy knows she should call the authorities and turn the infant over to them, but she just can’t. Thoughts of her own abandonment as a baby flood through her and she wants to keep the little one out of the hands of the authorities until the mother – hopefully –returns.

But will the mom come back? And if she doesn’t, what is Amy prepared to do about the baby who has, already, claimed her heart?

Enjoy an Excerpt

“What in the name of all that’s holy are you holding, Amy Dorrit?”

Willie Jackson stood at her office door, a lit cigarette dangling from a corner of his mouth, his leather jacket hanging open and his eyes as big and round as his county-famous blueberry pancakes.

“What does it look like?” Amy dug around in the carrier searching for a bottle, pacifier, something, to soothe the baby’s cries. “Lose the cigarette. It’s a baby and I’m pretty sure it’s hungry.”

He lifted those shocked eyes to Amy’s face. “Girl, you been keeping secrets from ol’ Willie?”

“Oh for Pete’s sake. Are you nuts, William Jefferson Jackson? It’s not my baby. I found it at the back door when I came downstairs.”

“Whose is it?”

“No idea.”

“What is it?”

Holding the small bundle like a football in one arm, she shoved the piece of paper she’d found at him. “Same answer. I haven’t looked yet. Here, read this. I found it tucked inside the blanket.” Once he had it, Amy placed her pinky finger over the baby’s lips. It immediately rooted, then latched on to suck.

“I knew it. It’s starving.”

“‘I’m sorry,” he read aloud, ‘but I can’t take care of her—’ well, we know it’s a girl –‘I have no job and no way to hold on to one with a baby. Please forgive me for leaving her like this, but I saw how kind you were yesterday and I know you’ll take care of her like I can’t.’” Willie scratched his head. “Well, shit. We got us a real abandoned baby, here, Ames ol’ girl.”

“Don’t curse in front of her.” She shot him an annoyed glare, her left eyebrow inching up her forehead to her hairline.

“It ain’t like she can understand me. She’s a baby, fer Chri-” Her other eyebrow followed its twin. “Er, pity’s sake.”

“I need something to feed her with.” She glanced around her office. “Can you get me one of the cake decorating bottles? The ones with the plastic tip? I think that’ll work.”

“What’a’ya gonna feed her? Frosting? You ain’t got no mother’s milk and you can’t feed her coffee creamer.”

“Dam-I mean, drat. You’re right. I can give her a little water to hold her over until I can run out and get her some formula.”

“Shouldn’t you call the police? I mean, she’s been abandoned, ain’t she? You can’t just keep her.”

Peggy Jaeger is a contemporary romance writer who writes Romantic Comedies about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them. If she can make you cry on one page and bring you out of tears rolling with laughter the next, she’s done her job as a writer!

Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories because she believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, she brings all topics of daily life into her stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents she longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through her books, she’s created the families she wanted as that lonely child.

When she’s not writing Peggy is usually painting, crafting, scrapbooking or decoupaging old steamer trunks she finds at rummage stores and garage sales.

UNTIL... by Author Beth Henderson

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today we welcome Author Beth Henderson to Notes From a Romantic’s Heart to talk about her book, Until.... a western historical from The Wild Rose Press. Beth has graciously agreed to answer a few of our nosey questions, as well.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Is your book based on real-life experience or a figment of your imagination?

Since I write historicals, I think you’d have to say the book is all “figment of my imagination”. The Old West is a place I love to “visit” though. Could be all the watching of westerns I did with my dad while growing up. Could be the history degree I got while living in Nevada. Could be that I just love a man with a six shooter on his hip and a Stetson pulled low over his eyes. Think Tom Selleck in Quigley Downunder.

Is the setting for your book real? If so, have you been there? If it’s fictitious, is there somewhere real that you’ve used as a model?

The actual mining camp is fictitious, but it is plunked down in the area where the Boise Basin gold rush that kicked off in August 1862 played out. Because I lived in Nevada and Arizona for 22 years, I’ve visited a lot of mining ghost towns, but the one in the book is just budding to be a town and conditions are rough. Have visited the sort of jail and cell where my heroine is incarcerated though in a historical park full of historic buildings.

Do you like to read in the genre in which you write? Or, are you adventurous?

Actually, as I write under three pen names, I already write adventurously through the genres, but I lean toward the Old West with historical romance and my Weird West Steampunk stories, plus mystery in nearly everything I write, be it urban fantasy comedy, Gaslamp fantasy, or contemporary tales. Currently just finishing a contemporary romantic suspense story that plays out in the Phoenix area, although I lived in Tucson.

If you listen to music while you write, what are the top three songs on your playlist?

I do listen to music when I write but it isn’t a “song” per se, but a performer or a composer or a type of music that I listen to. Soundtracks to movies have been a favorite to use because there are usually no words to tempt me to stop and sing along. But I like jazz, too, be it instrumentals or pop tunes like those from The Great American Songbook, and Pandora supplies these nicely.

Although the men dragged the half-clad woman along, their grips tight and threatening, she wasn’t fighting or resisting them physically or verbally. She looked beaten, not in body but in spirit. And yet, when she stumbled, the toe of her wear-marred but neatly laced-up boot catching in the cloying mud, pitching her forward out of the men’s custody, the crowd gasped. Some stepped farther back to avoid physical contact. The carrion seekers in the mob pressed nearer, set to rend her vulnerability.

They hurled insults at her. She suffered the name calling, if it could be called such. The style of her clothing—or lack of it—and the building itself proclaimed the truth of her profession. She was the whore they called her.

Then he heard the new word, the word that was at first only whispered before it gained a more daring voice: murderess.

One of the men yanked her upright, uncaring whether he hurt her or not. It was only then, when she raised her head, her chin, in a manner any grand dame reared in the top tier of Eastern society would recognize, that he knew her.

It couldn’t be.

And yet, when she swept the gathered crowd, the gaze she turned on them was the one she had learned at her mother’s knee. At her grandmother’s table and at enumerable dinners, balls, and afternoon teas in Boston.

Tal watched in stunned amazement as the once Honorable Miss Noletta Kittridge shrugged free of the man’s hand and with a back straightened by years of deportment, stepped from the meager shelter of the porch, moved beyond the hungry, insult-hurling crowd, and strode on her own toward the camp jail.

She looked at no one, met no eye, taking comfort in the inborn dignity of the class into which she had been born.

Her class, Tal thought, heart sore. He’d never been a true part of it, merely a hanger-on, a climber. A friend to her brother.

And that friend had called him a traitor to his country.

But Letty… What was she doing in Idaho Territory? She should be enjoying the comforts of Boston, being fêted by the officers who managed to make it home and the wealthy industrialists who paid other men to take their place in the infantry lines.

If she hadn’t stridden down the sorry muddy excuse of a street with her blueblood holding her above the rabble, he might have doubted his eyes. Even so, it was difficult to believe Letty Kittridge and the prostitute with blood and mud drying on her scant clothing were one and the same.

The show over, the crowd dispersed around him. Before they could all disappear, Tal tapped a blurry-eyed man in a threadbare suit coat on the shoulder.

“Pardon, friend,” he said. “Could you tell me what that was all about?”

“Gal shot her man, from the looks of it,” the fellow said. “Not surprised it happened, just that it took Pearl this long to do it.”

“Pearl?”

“The dove they arrested.”

“You sure she’s the one that did it?” Tal pressed.

“Wearing Rosser’s blood, isn’t she? Why the interest, mister?”

Tal gave the man what he hoped passed for a harmless grin. “Just making sure no other gal or man’s like to shoot my fool head off while I’m here.”

“Gold brought you, then?”

“Brought everyone else in town, too, I’d say,” Tal observed, his smile widening.

“You’re right,” the man agreed and chuckled. He offered his hand. “Ebner Melton, mayor of this little burg.”

“Adam Cain,” Tal said easily and pumped the mayor’s paw. He’d been using the alias for too long now to ever stumble over offering it. It was more difficult to remember his life as Talmadge Hammond back in Boston.

Did Letty feel the same?

“Where do you hail from, Mr. Cain?” the mayor asked.

“Anymore, the last gold field that called to me,” Tal admitted. “’Fore that, Canada and points beyond.”

“And might I ask what you did before you came down with gold fever?’

The mayor was treading on dangerous ground now, wanting to know what sort of man he’d been back East. But considering events at this gold strike, Tal decided the truth needed to be let out at least one last time.

“I was a lawyer, Mr. Mayor. One with a knack for defending the innocent.”

Another Book Birthday: BREATHE by Lucinda Race

Woo Hoo! We're celebrating again today with another Book Birthday for Lucinda Races' new release, Breathe, the second book in her Crescent Lake Winery Series.

About the Book

Romance and fine wine both need time to breathe…

Her family’s successful winery business in Finger Lakes New York should have gone to Tessa Price. She’d always dreamed of running the winery, but when the “prodigal son” returns to take up the reins, she boldly strikes out on her own, purchasing Sand Creek Winery—a cash-strapped competitor—right out from under her family. She can forge her own destiny, using her marketing skills and big plans to bring new life to the winery. But first she has a proposition for the sexy previous owner. And he’s likely to hate it.

Kevin “Max” Maxwell would never have willingly sold his winery to anyone named “Price.” Family always comes first, and if paying for his sister’s cancer treatment cost him his business, it was worth it. But when the new owner offers him a one-year contract to stay on as general manager, with a possible bonus, he really can’t afford to turn it down. He can ignore the effect her deep brown eyes and heart-shaped face have on his senses for a year, can’t he?

Relationships, like slowly ripening vineyards, take time. But Max has been keeping a secret from Tessa, one that could destroy her hopes for their future. Will a terrible accident force Tessa and Max to face how much they have to lose, or tear apart their budding relationship forever? Sometimes a romance is like a fine wine. To be its best, it just needs time to breathe.

~ ~ ~

An Excerpt

The moment Tessa opened the heavy wood and glass door, her eyes were drawn to the tall, open stairwell. Kevin Maxwell leaned against the steel and glass banister, watching her.

He greeted her with a flat smile. “Good morning, Ms. Price. Welcome to Sand Creek Winery.”

The glass door closed behind her with a small whoosh. She squared her shoulders and walked into her winery. “Please call me Tessa.”

He gave her a half nod. “Tessa.”

“I’m glad you’re here. I wanted to talk with you.”

“I’ve been clearing out my”—he gave a slow shake of his head—“your office. I won’t be long.”

She ascended the stairwell. “Wait.”

Kevin’s cool blue eyes met hers. He was dressed casually in a crisp, cream-colored shirt, the cuffs rolled back, which highlighted strong hands and muscled forearms. He had high cheekbones, a long, thin nose, and was more handsome up close. She guessed he was around her age.

“I’d like to start our relationship on the right foot.”

His eyes never left hers. Challenging her.

She had been right that he wasn’t thrilled to see her. She had negotiated the purchase through a broker since she suspected he wouldn’t sell to a Price, no matter how much money was involved. She’d made a fair offer and he’d accepted it.

She pointed to an open door. “After you.”

He did a one-eighty and strode through the doorway.

The large room was dominated by a long maple conference table and several leather chairs. In front of her was a wall of windows that looked out over acre after acre of vines. Pride surged in her. It already felt like she belonged. Several boxes were strewn about, in various stages of being packed. Not seeing a desk, she set her black leather briefcase on the table and walked to the windows.

“Quite the view.” Kevin had come to stand next to her. He was so close, she could feel the waves of indifference radiating off him.

Without looking at him, she said, “It looks completely different from this perspective. The virtual tour didn’t do it justice.”

“When I built this building, my intent was to be able to look out and witness nature as it nurtures the vines. Watching the vineyard throughout the seasons gives me hope for the future. There’s nothing like it.” He turned away as if he couldn’t bear to look any longer.

“Impressive.” She was reminded of the view in Don’s office. It was strikingly similar. She turned from the window and gestured to the chairs at the table. “Please, can we talk?”

He dropped to a wooden stool, leaving the executive chair noticeably empty.

Unsure where to start, she said, “You can trust me with Sand Creek Winery.” She empathized with how it must feel, forced to sell his business.

When she sat down, he gave her a curious look. “It was either accept the blind offer or let the bank take it. I’ll admit if I had known it was a Price, I might have reconsidered.”

She cocked her head to the side and let that comment slide. “I have a proposition for you.” She wanted to rephrase that, but it was already out there.

His eyebrow rose and his chin dropped a fraction of an inch. “I’m listening.”

TEN MILLION FIREFLIES by Marianne Rice

Happy Saturday everyone! Today we welcome author Marianne Rice to the blog.

Her new book, Ten Million Fireflies is the first book in her new Band of Sisters series. I'm so looking foward to this exciting series featuring miltiary/former military heroines! It's about time our sisters got their due!

About the Book

She wants to make up for her lonely past by doing something good for children. He wants to forget his past and stay the loner that he is.

She’s Brooklyn Ross, former Army sergeant and the reluctant recipient of a surprise five million dollars from her father—a man who gave her everything except love and support. So when she spends the cash on a deserted summer camp for kids who need just that, Brooklyn figures her future is looking bright. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a sexy neighbor with soulful green eyes right next door, who makes her laugh and challenges her at the same time. Because challenges are her specialty.

He’s Drew Beckett, an author who is definitely not facing writer’s block. And he’s absolutely not distracted by the gorgeous, nosey woman who thinks she’s going to make a project of the camp next door. He has a history with that property, and he has no interest in dredging up the guilty secret that comes with it. No prying neighbor is going to bring down the walls he’s built around his home… or his heart.

Until he meets Brooklyn.

“Any advice on how I can find out if she’s interested without making a fool of myself?”

If she’d known, she wouldn’t have come two seconds away from making a fool of herself. Thank God she didn’t say anything to him. Besides, she wasn’t the one to ask for dating advice.

“Not a one.” She bit into the salmon, the maple and ginger tingling on her tongue. Damn, she’d miss his cooking.

“You were amazing coming up with a series idea for me. Surely you can help me out here.”

Brooke swallowed her fish and washed it down with a sip of water. She’d need to cut back on the wine if she planned to keep her head on straight.

Mimicking his earlier moves, she dabbed the corners of her mouth with her napkin and set it by her plate. “I’m not one for mind games,” she sort of lied. Well, she hadn’t been until lately. “Your best bet is to come right out and tell her you’re interested.”

“I’m interested.”

“Yeah, like that. Just say it.”

“I’m interested.”

“See? You got it.”

That adorable smirk and gleam in his eyes made her girly parts wiggle. Not a good sign. She’d definitely had too much wine. She needed to leave before she did something stupid like cry or profess her undying love for him, which was completely obnoxious. Love had nothing to do with this.

“I’m interested.”

“There you go.” She stood and patted his shoulder. “Grub was good. I’ll help you with the dishes.” Brooke carried her plate and the empty risotto dish to the sink. The clouds had rolled in over the past hour as the weather forecasters had predicted, making the night sky darker than normal.

Drew didn’t exactly sneak up on her, his reflection in the window over the sink giving away his presence, but she would have known he was there anyway. He didn’t give her much personal space, his legs brushing up against her backside.

Brooke curled her lips, biting down on them, and sucked in a breath. “Do you, uh… have a container for the leftovers?” She wanted to turn around, but he nearly pinned her to the counter, not giving her much room to move.

“I’m interested,” he said softly, his words whispering across the nape of her neck, followed by the delicate touch of his hand on her shoulder. Drew’s touch was light as it swept down her arm, his fingers tracing along until they reached her wrist.

No man had ever seduced her with such simple words or light touch, if in fact what he was doing was seducing. It could be the wine she’d downed clouding her brain and distorting Drew’s words. Brooke lifted her gaze to the window and met his. Even with the dark shadows, she could see the intensity in his stare.

Could he really be directing those words at her? Weren’t they arguing just a few days ago about her opening the camp?

Shifting slightly so she faced him, the counter pressing against her butt, she tilted her head just a fraction. He was only a few inches taller than her and she liked how they fit together, even though they barely touched.

“You’ve got those lines down pat. I think you’re ready to use them on… her.” She still wasn’t one hundred percent sure she was reading him correctly. Although, if this was practice, when he spoke those words for real, the woman would orgasm simply by the intensity in his eyes and the softness of his words.

“Is there something else I need to say or do to make sure she understands how interested I am?” His voice was soft and tender.

“You could… you could show her.” Brooke didn’t mean to sound so throaty.

“How?” His fingers continued to trace circles around her wrist and up her forearm.

“With a kiss?” She wet her lips in anticipation. Please let this be real, she begged whatever gods were listening.

And hell on wheels, they were. Drew didn’t hesitate as he lowered his mouth to hers, his lips as sweet and soft as his fingers. He didn’t take possession of her, but touched his lips to hers with warm, tender kisses.
