THE WITCH AND THE DREAMWALKER by Author Victoria Rogers **REVIEW** *Giveaway*

Today we're pleased to welcome author Victoria Rogers to Notes From a Romantic's Heart to tell us about her new book, The Witch and the Dreamwalker, Book 2 in the McKinley Women series. You can find all of the stops on Victoria's tour at Goddess Fish Promotions. Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter drawing for your chance to win a $15 gift card. The entry form is at the bottom of this post.

It’s 1982, and corporate witch Vivian McKinley is determined to climb the ladder of a growing paranormal security firm. With the help of Xavier Prince, President and CEO of Prince Charms, Vivian uncovers a plot to take over the business. The pair navigate office politics and machinations to prove a psychic vampire’s treachery.

Available on Amazon

Vivian shook her head as the pair wandered off. “Soda and lime,” she ordered from the bartender as he finally made his way over. She tossed a bill into the tip jar as she waited.

At this rate she was going to need to go to bed at ten. She stubbed the cigar out in the marble ashtray but kept it as a prop, hoping it would dissuade anyone from offering her another. With John halfway into his cups the news of her promotion would spread like wildfire, and she wasn’t sure she was ready for that. She squeezed the lime into her drink and left the lime slice on a napkin. Bathroom. There would hardly be anyone in there since men outnumbered anyone else in the ballroom. She could escape and process there.

The bathroom was old and gaudy and coated in marble and fading gilt. It had a twelve-foot arched ceiling, and a maroon carpet. There was a sumptuous sitting area adorned with cream colored wing-back chairs and there were grand mirrors for women to, presumably, powder their nose in. The toilets were farther on through a gilded archway and a fan of potted plants.

The place was empty, thank goodness. She sat down at the far end in a chair by a counter. She put the cigar in an ashtray on the mirrored side table and leaned back. Head of Research and Development. Twenty-seven years old and the head of R and D. She clenched her fists and bit her bottom lip, kicking her feet in excitement. By the gods! Her. Vivian Mary McKinley, Head of Research and Development at Prince Charms. This shouldn’t be happening. It was supposed to take her years and years and years to achieve this, not three years and a major project later.

But then again, Xavier had founded Prince Charms at the age of twenty-six. If he could take a small paranormal security company and rocket to the largest in the country in just nine years, well, she could achieve big things too.

Her stomach was busy flipping about when the big wooden door with brass handles and ornate hinges swung open.

“Oh, honey, I thought I’d find you here,” Jenny said as she flopped down in a chair opposite Vivian. “People are asking about you out there.”

“Yes, well, they’re going to have to wait,” Vivian said with a wave of her hand. “I need a moment to myself first. Plus, John made me drink bourbon. I need a break.” She reached for her glass of soda water and took a sip.

“You’re not going to be sick, are you?”

“What? No. I’ll be fine. I just wasn’t expecting this, you know? It’s a lot to take in.”

“You better not be doubting yourself because you deserve every ounce of this promotion. You’re smart, and you’ve got ideas, and you have every bit as much wherewithal as one of those smug-ass bastards out there. No one has ever come up with a psychic vampire ward! No one, not ever, until you figured it out. You got there before anyone else in the world. Vivian, Vivian, look at me.” Jenny pursed her red lacquered lips.

Vivian ripped her eyes away from the ashtray and met Jenny’s pout with a laugh. “Yes! Yes! I hear you. On paper it all fits, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to accept.”

“What? Why not? Any one of those assholes would accept it without batting a lash. Even Peter, from accounting.”

“OK! OK,” Vivian conceded. “Fine. I deserve this promotion.”

“Yeah, you do, babe.” Jenny grinned. “Now, how long are we going to hide in the bathroom?”

“Give me a few more minutes.”

“Whatever you need.” Jenny managed to stay silent for thirty seconds before she spoke again. “So. What’s he like?”

“Who?”

“Mr. Prince! I’ve never met him. He never comes down to the labs. Mr. Simeon always goes upstairs to the offices for meetings. I’ve only ever talked to Pam, the receptionist upstairs.”

“I talked to him for all of three minutes. He smiled a lot, but he was promoting me. I assume most people smile at the person they’re promoting.”

Jenny giggled. “I wouldn’t know.”

Vivian looked up to the ceiling and sighed. “He seemed nice.”

“He’s a god in mortal form is what he is,” Jenny interjected. “Have you seen him on the tennis court?”

“Well, yes, at the club, but he’s our boss.”

“Just because he’s the boss doesn’t mean you can’t look.”

Vivian shook her head. “That’s not what I’m here for, Jenny. I’m here to be a professional. To grow and learn and well… be successful at it all.”

“You can do all that and still look,” Jenny said with a shrug.

“All right. Let’s go back to the party if it means I don’t get regaled with nonsense like this.” Vivian stood and picked up her matching clutch from the chair next to her.

“Anything to help,” Jenny said, smirking.

3.5 Stars

I found The Witch and the Dreamwalker a wonderful trip back to the 1980s with on-point descriptions of the people and places, as well as the troubles women faced climbing the corporate ladder. The writing was enthusiastic, despite a few minor grammatical errors/missing words, etc. However, the errors didn’t detract from the story enough to matter.

While I realize this was intended to be a steamy paranormal, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with how quickly Viv fell into the boss’ bed, especially after having to defend her promotion against the accusations that she’s slept her way up the ladder. I would have also liked to have seen more emphasis on the supernatural, as opposed to the office politics.

If you like your paranormal on the mild size, and your romance/lovemaking on the steamy side, you’re sure to enjoy this book.

MAKING CHRISTMAS: A DICKENS HOLIDAY PREQUEL by Author Nancy Fraser **BOOK BIRTHDAY**

What can I say??? It's time to start the holiday warm up celebrations! And, what better way than with Making Christmas, a prequel to my story, Millie's Awesome Holiday Miracle, in last year's Dickens Holiday Romance Anthology.

About the Book

A 1980s Vintage Romance ...

It’s been five years since William Barrett returned to Dickens to take over as CEO of Wil-Bar Toys. He’s spent these past years helping build Wil-Bar into a leader in creative, handmade toys. His work ethic and drive has left him little time for a personal life. Or, perhaps he’s still pining for the one who got away.

Catherine Gates moved away from Dickens six years earlier. Now a staff reporter for a woman’s magazine, she’s returning to Dickens to do a story on Wil-Bar Toys new production methods and get the scoop on their upcoming holiday line.

When Will and Cat meet up again for the first time in years, it’s as if they’ve never been apart. Rekindling their friendship, and attraction, becomes more important than Cat’s article, or even the secrecy of the new toy lines.

Can these two childhood friends make up for lost time and pursue the romance they missed out on years earlier? Or, will Cat’s story expose too much and put them at odds with one another?

September 1985 ~ Wil-Bar Toy Factory

“Isn’t it a bit early for Christmas carols?” William asked, motioning skyward where the factory speakers were blaring a string of both classical and modern holiday songs. “If we don’t vary it every once-in-awhile, I’m going to end up ripping the wires out of the ceiling.”

His father shot him a pained look. “Is it ever too early for Christmas music in a toy factory where we spend every working hour up until the beginning of December getting ready for the rush?” Waving his hand dismissively overhead, Wilfred Barrett added, “Besides, it keeps the production line moving like clockwork.”

“How’s the new head of design working out? What’s his name? Gibson?” Will asked.

“Ted Gibson. He’s got some great ideas for sure. Including inviting that magazine editor to send someone to write an article on our new state-of-the-art assembly line.”

“Somehow I don’t picture an article in a woman’s magazine doing justice to the mechanics involved in creating toys like our latest designs.”

Giving a shrug, Wilfred admitted, “It can’t hurt. Besides, it’s women who do most of the buying, especially for the children. If the article can convince these mothers that our toys are safe and won’t come apart with one day of rough play, then it’s as much as we can hope for, I suppose.” Pushing aside the ledger in front of him, he added, “I’d like you to be the one to give them the tour.”

“Why me? Let Gibson do it. After all, it was his idea. Or, you do it—it’s your company, after all. I’d much rather keep my focus on these sales and shipping projections.”

“You’re the new face of Wil-Bar Toys, son. The younger—what’s the term—hip version of a toymaker. Not that I don’t still love it, but these young mothers would much rather see your picture accompanying the article than mine.”

“Ted’s young too. And, if the women crowding around the watercooler are to be believed, quite a catch.”

His father leaned back in his chair, a sure sign the discussion was coming to an end, his decision made. “The magazine is sending one of their staff writers to do the interview. She’ll be here day-after-tomorrow.”

Will turned toward the door to his father’s office. “I feel the flu coming on,” he groused. “I may have to call in sick.”

“You might be a grown man, but I’m sure your mother would love to have you home all day long,” his dad quickly pointed out, a grin lighting his face. “She can stuff you with chicken noodle soup and fuss over you to her heart’s content.”

“You can be downright mean when you want to be, Pops” Will said, chuckling. “No doubt, you’d suggest she read to me too.”

SANTA BABY by Author Peggy Jaeger **BOOK BIRTHDAY**

The only thing better than my own Book Birthday, is that of a good friend. Today, Notes From a Romantic's Heart is overjoyed to welcome Author Peggy Jaeger back to the blog to share her new book, Santa Baby, a Dickens Holiday Romance prequel set in the 1980s!

About the Book

It’s Christmas Eve morning in the tiny New England town of Dickens.

Santa’s arrival is imminent, and a hint of snow is in the air.

Amy Dorrit is just about to open her popular diner for the breakfast rush when she discovers an abandoned baby on her back doorstep.

Amy knows she should call the authorities and turn the infant over to them, but she just can’t. Thoughts of her own abandonment as a baby flood through her and she wants to keep the little one out of the hands of the authorities until the mother – hopefully –returns.

But will the mom come back? And if she doesn’t, what is Amy prepared to do about the baby who has, already, claimed her heart?

“What in the name of all that’s holy are you holding, Amy Dorrit?”

Willie Jackson stood at her office door, a lit cigarette dangling from a corner of his mouth, his leather jacket hanging open and his eyes as big and round as his county-famous blueberry pancakes.

“What does it look like?” Amy dug around in the carrier searching for a bottle, pacifier, something, to soothe the baby’s cries. “Lose the cigarette. It’s a baby and I’m pretty sure it’s hungry.”

He lifted those shocked eyes to Amy’s face. “Girl, you been keeping secrets from ol’ Willie?”

“Oh for Pete’s sake. Are you nuts, William Jefferson Jackson? It’s not my baby. I found it at the back door when I came downstairs.”

“Whose is it?”

“No idea.”

“What is it?”

Holding the small bundle like a football in one arm, she shoved the piece of paper she’d found at him. “Same answer. I haven’t looked yet. Here, read this. I found it tucked inside the blanket.” Once he had it, Amy placed her pinky finger over the baby’s lips. It immediately rooted, then latched on to suck.

“I knew it. It’s starving.”

“‘I’m sorry,” he read aloud, ‘but I can’t take care of her—’ well, we know it’s a girl –‘I have no job and no way to hold on to one with a baby. Please forgive me for leaving her like this, but I saw how kind you were yesterday and I know you’ll take care of her like I can’t.’” Willie scratched his head. “Well, shit. We got us a real abandoned baby, here, Ames ol’ girl.”

“Don’t curse in front of her.” She shot him an annoyed glare, her left eyebrow inching up her forehead to her hairline.

“It ain’t like she can understand me. She’s a baby, fer Chri-” Her other eyebrow followed its twin. “Er, pity’s sake.”

“I need something to feed her with.” She glanced around her office. “Can you get me one of the cake decorating bottles? The ones with the plastic tip? I think that’ll work.”

“What’a’ya gonna feed her? Frosting? You ain’t got no mother’s milk and you can’t feed her coffee creamer.”

“Dam-I mean, drat. You’re right. I can give her a little water to hold her over until I can run out and get her some formula.”

“Shouldn’t you call the police? I mean, she’s been abandoned, ain’t she? You can’t just keep her.”

From His Private Secretary ~ 1958

The desktop exactly as it should be, Eleanor stepped into the private kitchenette next to her office and started a pot of coffee. Finally, she set up a serving tray with two china cups and saucers, a sugar bowl and cream pitcher and two silver spoons. From the cupboard, she took a serving plate and placed it on the tray.

She was about to reach for the linen napkins when her boss’ private phone line rang. Glancing briefly at her watch, Eleanor walked quickly to his desk and lifted the receiver to her ear. “Good morning, Mrs. Norton,” she said without hesitation, “Mr. Norton has not yet arrived.”

“It’s just as well. He’s angry with me and probably wouldn’t speak to me anyway.”

Eleanor could hear the near hysteria in the woman’s voice and wondered what the problem was today. “I’m sure Mr. Norton will be more than happy to speak with you.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” the woman said sadly.

Eleanor felt a rush of compassion for her employer’s mother. The woman doted on her sons, sometimes a bit too much. “Why don’t I have him call you as soon as he arrives?”

“Well, all right, my dear, if you think he will.”

“I’ll dial the number myself,” Eleanor told her.

“I don’t know what Jessup would do without you, Miss Martin. You are a godsend, you know that.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Norton. I appreciate the compliment.” Eleanor paused for a moment and then asked, “Is there anything else, Mrs. Norton?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Well, then—”

“Oh yes, there was one other thing.”

Eleanor waited, and waited. Finally, she asked, “Mrs. Norton, what was the one other thing?” When no immediate response came, Eleanor could almost picture the woman’s puzzled expression.

“You know, dear, I can’t remember.”

“I’m sure it will come to you. When it does, please don’t hesitate to call back. In the meantime, though, I’ll make sure Mr. Norton calls you as soon as possible.”

“The charity ball,” the older woman said quickly. “That was it.”

Eleanor reached for her boss’ calendar and flipped the page, asking “The one on April twenty-sixth for Children’s Hospital?”

“Yes, my dear, that’s the one.”

“Was there something special you wanted to know about the ball, Mrs. Norton? It is on Mr. Norton’s schedule, if you were concerned.”

“I don’t mean to seem nosy, Miss Martin, but do you have any idea who my son is taking to the event?”

Eleanor closed her eyes for a brief moment, picturing in her mind’s eye the parade of beautiful women who routinely danced through Jessup Norton’s life. Summoning her best smile on a deep breath of air, she said, “It isn’t marked on his calendar. He hasn’t mentioned anything to me, so I’m afraid I can’t say.” To herself, she thought, not that I would even if I could. There were some things a private secretary kept private, even from her boss’ mother.

“I just hope it’s not that dreadful Carpenter woman. She’s got her sights set on my son. It’s shameful. She’s divorced, you know. And, you know what they say about divorced women.” When Eleanor failed to respond, Mrs. Norton added, “It’s like buying a lollipop with all the red licked off.”

Eleanor stifled a chuckle and listened patiently while the Norton family matriarch bristled over the thought of her son dating a divorced woman. When she finally stopped for air, Eleanor asked, “Is there anything else, Mrs. Norton? I really need to finish preparing for Mr. Norton’s arrival.”

“No, my dear; I’m sorry for bending your ear so much. It’s just I worry about Jessup.”

Eleanor wanted so desperately to remind Edith Norton that poor little Jessup was a thirty-five-year-old man and could take care of himself. Instead, she said, “Worrying is what mothers do, Mrs. Norton. Or so I’ve been told.”

“One of these days, Miss Martin, you’ll meet that special man and quit your job to raise a family. Once you’re a mother, you’ll understand completely.”
